Yep. Get a personal trainer . | Swim Tri Sail Chicago

Yep. Get a personal trainer .

I still say if you have a little bit of "cache" and you want to up your health and fitness at your local gym, get a personal trainer.

WHY?

Because if you view hiring a personal trainer like I did as a health investment and an education you will get a MASTER'S IN YOURSELF, your body, health and fitness, you.

I hired a personal trainer in February 2009 at the health club I attended and I'm telling you it is the best thing I have ever done for myself, EVER, and I STILL believe this to be true.

Funny story: my trainer came to me, in the form of the 2009 Winter edition of the health club magazine that members received in the mail. There he was right on the front cover with one of his clients. I laugh at the thought of that cover now - if you looked at the lighting on him it's like the heavens opened up and (insert that one organ and choir chord) "aaaaahhhh!" The angel trainer was sent from above!

We hit it off right away - ?I got a trainer who's cerebral, intelligent, good sense of humor... actually a stubborn perfectionist just like me! ?I told him right off the bat that I was a very visual learner. He listened and let me be me. Looking back at the plethora of nicknames I gave him, the humorous moments and the bazillions of emails I sent him with all my questions - it was a wonderful experience despite everything I have been through, and I would not change a thing.

Dodgeball

If you are anything like me you probably hated Physical Education as a kid and was the last to be picked in dodgeball because, well you dreaded that too. If you were the opposite of that then you probably participated in some sports activities growing up and learned the benefits of being part of a team - just a guess.

Either way you're going to learn something from a personal trainer - if that person is the right fit for you.

For me I learned so many things that I'd never heard of before - "titration?" "drop sets?" "supersets?" ? Whaa?? I did them all.? I used strength training equipment and eventually learned how to use them with a "clean" effort. OMG - just like I said in my last post "clean" - that word still bothers me. I get what that means but I still get images of a bar of soap.

I worked with that trainer for an 18 month period and I did my first triathlon, something that I never thought I'd be able to do. ?I still don't like dodgeball but it is very likely that most of the kids I grew up with have not completed a triathlon - just a guess.

If you decide to hire a trainer, get to know their boss first.??If you are looking into getting a new membership somewhere and the sales guy is pitching their personal training (especially now at the end of their 3rd quarter),? chances are it is a really good deal but still insist on talking to the head of the personal training department.

Why?

Because it is the department manager's job to make sure you and your trainer are the right fit and it is his/her responsibility to ensure your success.

Now I have New Trainer for a short period of time before I bust back out on my own and thanks to the recommendation? one of his department heads when I first joined we get along fabulously. Even though I've been through hell and back I needed another health club because of my commute.? Not close to home but close to work and I'm good with that.

The health club will want to keep you engaged in their programs - believe me it's all about member retention. And if you're a successful client they will want to keep you happy. And in order for you to be successful and happy your trainer needs to be the right fit for you.

Your trainer needs to listen, be willing to answer your questions, be available to you within a minimum of a business day to answer those questions you might have on your progress. And if you have a successful relationship the trainer will want to keep you and encourage you in your goals.

Yes it's all about money, on both ends, but it's YOUR money and you can make this health investment as YOU see it fit to be. By hiring a trainer you can learn so much about your bodies, how you tick. what works for you and what doesn't, and overall you can shape up that work in progress you've been managing since you were born and work on achieving your personal physical bests.

Talk to the boss of the personal trainers at the gym in which you attend. Find out about their deals - they have them, all the time. If you don't want to train alone ask about group deals. If you don't know anyone with whom you'd like to group train ask the department head if there is someone else looking for a training partner.

I'm working with 2 people now - a trainer and a nutritionist. It's time for me to take a deeper dive into clean eating and corral my tendencies to use food as a means of comfort.? I want to take a more scientific approach because for me it helps put things in perspective. It might help you too. Who knows...

Of course there are a lot of other options out there, from group programs to running programs to? group sessions with a trainer along with your friends. You can go to a place where there's personal training only or specialize in a more recent trend such as Crossfit.

Whatever you decide to do it's worth it. You will be able to improve upon your works in progress. If you're more athletic you can maintain what you've got. Either way you will get to the point where you will be able to improve, maintain and master the exercises the trainer gives you and you will feel so much healthier, love what you learn and will want more.

This is why I came to ChicagoNow - to talk about what I learned and share its goodness. I loved what I learned and I want to learn more.

I'm just going to keep on keeping on.

It works. Hire a trainer. Get the right fit. In doing so:

YOU CAN GET A MASTER'S IN YOU.
