Why the GOP Needs to Change Its Stand on Gay Marriage

Should the Republican Party abandon its official opposition to gay marriage? Yahoo News asked conservative and GOP voters to share where they'd like their party to stand on the issue.

COMMENTARY | I was born in St. Louis to a Republican family. I currently live in Milwaukee, Wis., and I am still a registered Republican, but I believe the party needs to change its stand on gay marriage.

Per the Republican platform of 2012, "Traditional marriage is the foundation of civil society and it determines our success as a nation." Oh really? So, if 50 percent of marriages end in divorce then failed marriages must be the cause of all of society's problems? By this logic, no one should be allowed to get married at all. The platform goes on to say, "All Americans should be treated with respect and dignity." Well, respect and dignity are great, but what about equality?

Per a national poll by the Washington Post/ABC News, 58 percent of Americans believe that gay couples should be allowed to get married and have the same rights as heterosexual couples. If the GOP ever wants to win another national election it really needs to get off its high horse.

A person can be the most moral and ethical human being to ever walk the face of Earth, but that person cannot tell another human that they are different so they don't deserve equal rights. As long as no one is being hurt, what a person does in their own bedroom is no one else's business.

If the Republican Party does not come to terms with its prejudices against homosexuals then it will continue to lose constituents including me.
