BEIRUT: Israel now has the technical ability to draw oil from Lebanese territory through the discovery of a new oil well, said caretaker Energy Minister Gebran Bassil, who called for an exceptional meeting of Cabinet to address the matter.
?Israel discovered a new gas field that is about 4 kilometers from the Lebanese [maritime] border and theoretically this means that Israel now has the possibility to reach Lebanese oil and this is a new and dangerous development,? said Bassil, speaking during a news conference Friday.
The minister said the Jewish state could reach Lebanon?s oil once it started drilling in the newly discovered well. Bassil cited both horizontal and vertical drilling as possible means Israel could use to access Lebanon?s potential oil and gas wealth.
He urged Lebanon not to tamper with the deadline for tenders and called for an exceptional Cabinet session in order to pass decrees relating to the country?s oil and gas.
?Lebanon should not be late on the deadlines set for the oil extraction,? he said, adding that there are two urgent decrees which need to be approved by Cabinet.
?The first decree is about the marine blocs and the second is about the possibility of oil exploration and production,? Bassil said.
?It is possible, both politically and by the Constitution, to hold an extraordinary session to approve these two decrees,? he said.
